Got home today from work. Sitting back, I started listening to music while I unwind from the day. Skipped many different songs on my Spotify list until I finally came to rest on a selection of older Christian songs that were once so central to our lives. Margaret Becker, Jars of Clay, Brandon Heath, Carolyn Arends, Newsboys, and others.
Without deliberately thinking about much, I read a prophetic post from Pam Clark about the Lord showing her the contrast between many of the movements of the past and the modern movements that have become enticed with charming words and great promises along the paths of lukewarmness of today’s ministries.
Then after a Margaret Becker song or two, I started thinking about a conversation I had a while back with another prophetic friend. He and I had talked about the cycle of Church history, falling into the same old potholes of doctrine. And then at some point, the Lord would raise up leaders who would rebel and do a “reset.” As a result, miracles would flow and the garden of the Lord would bloom again.
Then a Geoff Moore song called “The Vow” came rolling around on my Spotify list, reminding me of a Vow to Lord so many years ago under harder times.
Then I read a post, a friend from the Carolinas that she made about hidden objects harboring demonic spirits in Christian homes.
So here is what I posted as a comment: “Back in the day (late1980’s) there was a small team of us that often got invited into Christian homes. We had powerful worship sessions and then let the Holy Spirit lead us in “cleaning” the house. We often removed many surprising things that the owner never realizes was in their house. Even though many of those things were in plain sight, the homeowner’s vision had become “blinded” by the spirits in the room. Worship often opened the eyes. Once removed, we often got reports for days or even weeks later how the changed atmosphere in the room catapulted everything Spiritually good, forward.”
Then after reflecting on what I wrote while stirring my wife soup, I got thinking about patterns in this life, the Spiritual kind and the things I have seen.
We often “see” what we have trained our mind to see. All too often we are often “blind” to things that are not important to us. That’s why a professional person can spot things others will never see.
Case in point would be when your wife talks you into going Morel mushroom hunting in the forest. You can walk past a hundred of them, never seeing the darn things until you find the first. Then, suddenly you see them all, even the ones you stepped on!
We do the same thing in a church. We often live in it, day by day. Seeing only what our mind or the “other” spiritual realm has trained us to see. But, when the Lord starts peeling back the veil. We become “aware” of the obvious. We see the broken and the hurting around us, as well as the hidden flaws in the foundation that darkness has made a home of inside.
When the Lord touches our eyes, our perceptions of reality are no longer shifted or askew and we often become shocked that others do not see it, even if you tell them.
Just as our small team and the homeowners years ago could not see the things hidden in plain sight until we sought the Lord in worship. It takes the anointing/gift of the Lord to open the eyes.
Remember the Lord solution for lukewarmness in the Bible in Revelation 3?
“To the angel of the church in Laodicea write:
These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’
But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich, and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, SO YOU CAN SEE.
Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
We have so, so many big ministries these days claiming to be moving in power. But, I have lived just long enough to remember the truly more powerful ones of the past that did not need the “powerhouse” of social media to promote them. And the majority of those people have now gone home to be with the Lord. They were a special breed that often had signs and wonders backing up their words. Not like today!
I, like a small growing number of people, are just not impressed by what is presented before the church. Many of today’s voices are little more than “prophetic” news commentators, talking about events after the fact.
Money & social fame has replaced much of the true foundation.
But there are a few left, that have not “soiled their clothes” We just have not trained our eyes to see them. But they are there, waiting.
Maybe it’s time for the Lord and us to find each other once more, recommit to our First Love.
